Japan, 2023
Japanese w. English Subtitles

“Kore-eda, no stranger to working with children, has captured an indelible depiction of early adolescence, with Kurokawa and Hiiragi giving two of the most profoundly genuine performances on film.”
-Austin Chronicle

Director Hirokazu Koreeda (known for Shoplifters) crafts an intricate and complicated thriller with shifting perspectives that poignantly capture the anguish of parenting and the unknowable quality of children.

Monster, which took home the award for “Best Screenplay” at Cannes, follows the journey of a mother who investigates her young son’s sudden and strange behavior. Discovering that a teacher is responsible, she storms into the school demanding to know what’s going on. But as the story unfolds through the eyes of mother, teacher and child, the truth gradually emerges.
